Basic information about dentures

What are dentures?

Dentures are prosthetic dental appliances that are created to specifically replace a person’s missing teeth. They are typically supported by the gums, jawbone and even the cheeks too! Any tissues that exist within the oral cavity will help support dentures.

Different types of dentures

A lot of people wonder whether or not there are different types of dentures that one can consider. And, the answer is yes! There are two main types of dentures - full or partial.

Full dentures are used when a person has no natural teeth remaining and they are typically removable. Partial dentures are used when people still have some teeth remaining. They are typically made to attach to the remaining teeth and they don’t tend to be removable.

The process

A dentist will likely examine the mouth, the missing spaces where teeth used to be and then begin the process of dentures. The process does involve a few visits as a dental lab does have to specially make the dentures for each person. A molding will be taken of a person’s mouth so that the dentures fit perfectly. The dental lab will create the dentures and then the dentist is able to hand them off so that a person can get back to their regular eating and smiling habits.

Caring for dentures

If and when someone decides to have dentures, it is important that they follow a dental and oral hygiene routine to ensure that they stay in the best shape possible. Dentures do require regular cleanings to be done. A person can use a soft-headed toothbrush in order to keep them clean. If a person has removable dentures then they are to be left in a wet solution such as water or a denture cleaning solution.

Dentures are costly and require an involved process so it is best that a person maintains good care in order to avoid replacement. When they are not in use, they must be kept wet in order to prevent drying out.

Dentures offer someone a way to chew naturally and smile confidently again. While there is so much information that one should know before considering them, here we have covered the basics. It’s always best to consult with a dental professional when thinking about dentures as they can help determine whether or not they are for you.
