Does Getting Dental Veneers Hurt?

Dental veneers are used by dentists all over the world to quickly alter a person's smile. It is one of the most effective ways to fix stains and discoloration that cannot be eliminated with whitening treatments. Veneers can also be used to deal with other oral issues like gaps between teeth, minor alignment issues and tooth deformities.

A veneer is a tooth-like cover that is placed on the front of a person's natural tooth. It looks just like a real tooth, and it hides all the flaws on the tooth it is covering. The process of getting veneers is not painful. A local anesthetic is typically administered during the procedure, and the most patients feel afterward is increased tooth sensitivity for a few days.

What goes on during the installation of dental veneers?

For most people, getting dental veneers requires two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will evaluate the patient to determine if veneers are the best way to go about dealing with their oral issues. If veneers are deemed a viable option, the dentist will educate the patient about what to expect.

The dentist might make an impression of the patient's teeth or use digital imaging to create a model of the person's teeth. The veneers are matched to the patient's natural shade, and their size and shape can be adjusted as desired.

Once the patient and dentist have agreed on what the prosthetics should look like, the information is sent to a lab where the veneers are made. This can take a couple of weeks. Some dentists have CEREC equipment in their clinics, and that gives them the ability to make veneers in-office in less than an hour. When this tech is available, the process of getting veneers can be completed during a single visit to the dental clinic.

The dentist will prepare the patient's teeth for veneers by removing a thin layer of enamel. Dentists do this to prevent the prosthetic from making the person's teeth appear unusually large. It also leads to a stronger bond between the person's teeth and the veneers after installation. The patient will usually be fitted with temporary veneers to protect their prepared teeth and give them an idea of how their smile will look once the custom veneers are ready.

The clinic will call the patient for a second appointment. During this visit, the dentist will take off the temporary veneers and install the customized ones. The dentist will also educate the patient on how to properly take care of their newly restored smile.
